Week 17 with Triplets

Week of October 25, 2021

It’s Halloween Week!

The week brought a lot of fun, including their first Halloween, and a few challenges to overcome.

Interaction Between Babies

My favorite moments this week revolved around the interactions between the babies. Individual babies have looked at their siblings over the last few weeks, but this was new. It was the first time I’ve noticed them really matching each other’s gaze, smiling to get a return smile, and even the exchange of a few words.

Cricket Babies

The funniest moment I had this week was arriving one morning to the sound of at least two babies stirring in their cribs. The days are getting shorter so the nursery is still dark. It’s also feeding time and they all need to stay on schedule, but the sleeping baby should be retrieved last.

I approached the nursery and turned on the light in the room next door. Barely enough illumination to find my way around and can’t quite see faces clearly. Earlier in the week I’d awoken a baby who was sleeping deeply and, understandably, received a very startled look.

If you’re not familiar with crickets, they love to chirp in the dark but go silent when approached. Well, I enter the nursery and the babies that are awake stop making noise or moving.

Luckily I picked them in the correct order and we had a calm start to the day. Might need to ask Santa for night vision goggles.

Diaper Rash

Our biggest challenge for the week was dealing with a few sick tummies. If the number of diapers used was alarming during a normal week, it gets really bad when they’re sick.

Whatever was working through their little systems was going the full duration and diaper rash hit hard. Baby A got it the worst. The poor girl was just getting over colic and now has to deal with a painful rash.

Their desperate mother worked through all her resources to find a remedy. There are a lot of diaper rash treatments so it came down to what worked best for our babies.

Ultimately she discovered the following regimen that helped their rash and provided some relief.

Sensory Activity

Once the babies started feeling better their mom decided to have a sensory activity. We put the babies in their Bumbos, with the trays attached, put a dab of rice cereal on their tray and gave them each a spoon.

The goal was not to eat but rather a chance to practice using the spoon. Mostly it was about using their hands to play in the cereal.

Because the babies are noticing each other more, I placed them in a circle facing each other. Things started out fine but Baby B quickly decided she wasn’t in the mood. The other two enjoyed making a mess, and everyone had a good nap afterword.

Triplet First Halloween

Of course the highlight of the week was the baby’s first Halloween. The theme this year was zoo animals and their one-year-old neighbor dressed as the zoo keeper.

The first outing in their costumes was Boo at the Zoo. We are so fortunate that we have the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, and they do it up big for Halloween.

Next was a trip to Mimi’s work. Every year they host a trick-or-treat party for employee’s children and grandchildren. The triplets were a big hit, making the rounds in the WonderFold Wagon.

They finished the weekend at a party with their parent’s friends and then a low key Halloween night handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Next year promises to be even more fun!
