Introduction to Our Triplets
In December of 2020 we learned that our oldest daughter, and her husband, were pregnant with our first grandchild. Like so many couples, they had difficulty getting pregnant. After two-and-a-half years of trying they finally found success with fertility treatments.
Blood work was run to confirm their pregnancy and hormone levels came back with the possibility of multiple babies. The rest of the family immediately went to the idea of twins, but my smart ass said — out loud, mind you — “…or more”. The first ultrasound appointment revealed babies A, B and… C, as they’re typically labeled with multiples.
Announcing the Pregnancy
Without hesitation the extended family embraced the thought of welcoming triplets. Of course, none of us would have to carry them to term or be responsible for every aspect of their upbringing. Eventually my daughter and her husband wrapped their heads around the reality of the situation.
Being the proud parents of two girls ourselves, we were quietly hoping for at least one girl. The gender reveal took place on a pandemic-era Zoom call so family and friends could watch live. The ceremony involved popping giant balloons filled with pink or blue confetti for each baby.
When the first balloon burst with pink tissue paper dots, the grandparents-to-be were elated. With all balloons popped we knew to expect two girls and a boy, all of whom we love equally and more than we ever knew was possible.
Healthy Pregnancy and Birth
From our perspective, the pregnancy went very well and my daughter carried the full 36 weeks (the ultimate, and rarely achieved, goal for multiples). The babies were delivered with minimal drama and their mother came through the procedure brilliantly. The triplets entered the world healthy and strong and never spent a day in the NICU.
Day Care for Triplets
Caring for triplets is a huge undertaking emotionally, physically and financially. Our family is in a unique situation where I am semi-retired and have volunteered to provide day care for the triplets. This allows my daughter and her husband to focus on advancing their careers, something they’ll need to raise these three kids.
So, here’s how things have gone so far….
