Strollers for Newborn Triplets

Whether it’s a walk around the park or an outing to see the pediatrician, getting triplets around takes a little extra effort

For parents with one baby, it’s amazing the variety of equipment and technology available.

It may surprise you to learn that, while manufacturers make some considerations for twins, once you get into triplets and above there are far fewer options available. Even when you do find strollers for three and four kids/babies, the price tag is shocking.

Putting price aside, we did look at strollers for three and four children but most felt cumbersome and didn’t quite fit our needs.  Early on I was hitting garage sales in hopes of finding a good double stroller. My plan was to carry the third child in a chest/back carrier (which I cover in another post), but never found exactly what I was looking for.

My daughter, however, discovered the WonderFold Wagon and felt it was a great solution.  The advantages, as she saw them, are:

  • Folds up to fit perfectly in the back of a minivan
  • Comfortably fits through doorways and around everyday obstacles
  • Holds all three infants lying flat in the bottom for doctor visits and simple outings
  • It comes with seat inserts, when they’re ready to sit upright. What I love is the five-point harness to keep squirmy toddlers in place
  • Although it looks like — and is called — a wagon, it has a push handle to better keep an eye on the kids

The only thing I’ll say about the WonderFold Wagon is that the handle can be too short for taller people, like myself.  Even the triplet’s average-height dad found himself kicking the rear wheels and struggling to maintain control of such a large wagon.

Custom Handle for the WonderFold Wagon

While a slightly longer handle is available from the manufacturer, I went all out and designed my own extension handle using PVC piping.  Not only does it better accommodate my height, but is removable for transport using Velcro straps.

There are also vertical handholds incorporated for improved maneuverability, as this heavy wagon can become unwieldy on uneven surfaces.

We recently went on a day trip to the zoo, which is quite hilly and requires a lot of twists and turns through exhibits. With the handle extension, and the quality construction of the WonderFold Wagon, it was nearly effortless pushing the babies around.

Joovy TwinRoo+ Modified for Triplets

Thanks to social media groups catering to parents of multiples, we discovered how some people are using in-line twin car seat strollers and hanging a third car seat off the handle with large carabiners.  With this bit of knowledge, I was again on the hunt.

That same day I stumbled upon a Joovy TwinRoo+ at a children’s consignment store.  Although you wouldn’t want to use it for a day at the zoo, it’s a slick setup for running errands. The Joovy is surprisingly easy to maneuver and you avoid taking the babies in-and-out of their car seats.
